Compress PDF for Upload
A job application, visa portal or admissions form that rejects your PDF is almost always enforcing a size limit, not a page limit. This tool tries progressively harder compression until your file is under the target you set, so it clears the portal instead of bouncing back. No signup, nothing uploaded.
- No signup
- No watermark
- No file limit
- Free at download
Three steps
Compress PDF for Upload, without the extra steps.
- Select your PDF, or drop it onto the page. It opens in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
- Set a target matching the portal's stated limit, or use the 5MB default if you do not know it.
- Download the result and upload it. If the portal still rejects it, lower the target and try again.
Why use this tool
Built forthis exact case.
Upload limits vary by portal: job application systems and government forms commonly sit anywhere from 2MB to 10MB. If the portal gave you the exact number, type it into the target field below. Otherwise the default here is a middle-of-the-road 5MB.
Need a specific file size instead?
Jump straight to a common target: 100KB, 200KB, 300KB, 500KB, 1MB, 2MB, 10MB. For full manual control instead of a target, use the general Compress PDF tool.
Other ways to use this tool
Compress a PDF for email, without losing quality, to the smallest size, for free, without software. To cut pages instead of recompressing, use Split PDF, Delete PDF Pages or Extract PDF Pages. Not sure why the file is big in the first place? See the usual causes or how compression works.
The question everybody asks
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no trial, no watermark on the output, no cap on file size or page count, and no payment step between you and the download button.
It is free because it is cheap to run: your PDF is compressed by your own browser, so there is no upload, no server doing the work and no storage to pay for.
FAQ
Questions peopleactually ask.
How do I make a PDF file smaller so I can upload it?
Set the target below to your portal's stated limit, or leave the default if you do not know it. The tool recompresses the images inside your PDF and tries progressively harder settings until the file fits.
What do I do if a PDF file is too big to upload?
Check whether the portal states a size limit. If it does, use that as your target here. If the file still will not fit after compression, the images may already be as small as they can safely go, and removing pages is usually the next step.
How do I fix a PDF that is too large?
Most oversized PDFs are large because of embedded photos or scanned pages saved as images, which is exactly what this tool recompresses. If your PDF is mostly text, it is probably already close to as small as it will get.
Do I need to know the exact upload limit before I start?
No. The default target is set to a common ceiling. If your file still gets rejected after compressing, lower the target and run it again.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser tab, before you ever get to the portal's own upload step.
Will this work for a scanned application or ID document?
Yes, scans are usually the easiest case, since a scanned page saved as an image is exactly what this tool recompresses. A form that is mostly typed text will shrink much less, because there is less image data to work with.
